How Does Your Device Connect?

We take connectivity for granted — we buy a new phone, games console, or laptop, and it just connects to the Internet. But to get online, your data needs to pass through lots of different networking hardware.

This page covers the networking hardware you need to know for your qualifications.

Inside your Device

Modern devices have their connectivity hardware built-in to the motherboard. This section treats them as separate components which can be added to a computer.

Network Interface Card

Allows wired connections to a network. The standard for wired network connections is Ethernet.

Wireless Interface Card

Allows wireless connections to a network. The standard for wireless network connections is Wi-Fi.

Local Area Network Devices

Your device does not connect directly to the Internet, it must first connect to your local area network. When connected, your data will then pass through various networking hardware on the local area network.

Your home broadband provider will bundle much of this networking hardware into a single device (they usually call it a hub).

Larger networks will keep the devices separate. You must learn the names and purposes of these devices. In an exam, do not refer to a hub.

Wireless Access Point

Connects to your device's wireless interface card and gives it access to the local area network.

Network Switch

Network Switch

Connects Ethernet cables from devices on a LAN. Traffic is sent to the correct destination device.

Router

Router

Connects the local area network to the broadband provider's network and directs (routes) data to its destination.
